An Overlooked Alabama Workers’ Compensation Benefit: The Kids’ Chance Scholarship Program

 

When a workplace injury or fatality changes a family’s life forever, the focus is understandably on medical care and financial benefits. Unfortunately, one valuable resource is often overlooked: the Kids’ Chance Scholarship Program.

 

Created by the Workers’ Compensation Section of the Alabama State Bar in 1992 and administered by the Alabama Law Foundation, Kids’ Chance provides scholarships to children whose parent has been permanently and totally disabled or killed in a work-related accident. Scholarships help cover the cost of vocational training, college, and graduate education, giving families hope at a time when higher education may seem financially out of reach.

 

Importantly, families do not have to wait until their children are in high school - or even close to college - to take advantage of the program. Through the Planning for the Future initiative, parents of younger children can register years in advance so Kids’ Chance can maintain contact and provide guidance when the child becomes eligible to apply for scholarship assistance. Taking this simple step early can make a meaningful difference later.

 

Workers’ compensation professionals, employers, adjusters, mediators, attorneys, and nurse case managers are often in the best position to make families aware of this opportunity. A single conversation today could help open the door to a child’s future tomorrow.
